There are certain phenomena of nature that are taking place about us every day which we call electrical, and to that which produces these phenomena we give the name electricity. The exact nature of electricity is not known, yet the laws governing its action, under various conditions, are well understood, just as the laws of gravitation are known, although we define the constitution of gravity. Electricity is neither a gas nor a liquid; its behaviour is sometimes similar to that of a fluid so that it is said to flow through a wire. This expression of flowing does not really mean there is an actual movement in the wire, similar to the flow of water in a pipe, when it possesses electrical properties, but is simply a convenient expression for the phenomena involved. According to the modern electron theory of electricity, there is a movement of some kind taking place in the circuit, but the real nature of this movement is not as yet very well understood. A great many electrical problems can be easily understood by comparing them to a similar hydraulic problem, where the relation of the various quantities and the results are apparent under given conditions, and on account of the similarity of the two, the hydraulic analogy will often be used to illustrate what actually takes place in the electrical circuit.
